For Recovery Engineering, she introduced a line of water purifiers into outdoor recreation stores, and in-home water filter systems into mass-market retailers. PUR became one of the fastest growing companies in U.S., and is now part of the P&G brand.

Jan created the “Land of Dairy Queen” that pushed the Dairy Queen out of a major down trend to over $1 billion in sales. Their stock tripled in value, allowing major franchise and new product expansion.

She has won numerous creative awards including CLIO, The International Film Festival of New York, New York Art Directors Club, Addy, Effy, The One Show, Communication Arts, London International Advertising Federation, PRSA, Creativity, and AIGA. As Creative Director for Project Lifesaver public service campaign, the team won both an Emmy and a Peabody award, and is credited with increasing seatbelt use over 25 percent in Minnesota.

Carol Kittelson was trained in couture sewing and pattern making, which taught her how to construct, refine and finish things beautifully. She has great design ability which she has used in a variety of ways — as a graphic designer/illustrator, an interior designer, and a couture sweater designer.

Carol understands retail from many points of view. She was Quality Assurance Director in Trend Merchandising for Dayton Hudson Corporation, and owned her own gift shop on the North Shore. Early in her career she worked as Advertising and Promotional Director for J.M. McDonalds stores, and Salkin and Linoff, where she developed new print and radio advertising campaigns for several retail chains.

Under her own label, Carol Kittelson Knits, she designed and manufactured a line of couture sweater clothes, sold at high end retailers across the country. She was a featured artist at Hibbard McGrath Gallery in Breckinridge, Colorado for her wearable art.

As lead designer for the conversion of 110 hotel rooms into 35 deluxe condominium suites at Superior Shores Resort, Carol created a contemporary cabin look with luxurious amenities combined with classic knotty pine, stone fireplaces, and custom-made furnishings and accessories give guests a unique and timeless experience. The project sold-out in a quarter of the time expected, and has since been widely copied up and down the North Shore of Lake Superior.

Carol is a hands-on creative person who brings outstanding taste and technical ability to whatever she does. She appreciates the importance of using quality materials and understands the latest trends. She has received numerous awards for her creative work.
